It Wasn't A Loss, It Was A Lesson
The King High Girls' Water Polo team played in their first ever CIF playoff
game and their last game of the season. They traveled to Arlington High School
to take on the second ranked Huskies of J.W. North.
For two quarters they Wolves
put up a great fight. Abby York scored the first goal while the defense and
Lindsay Nichols played a strong defense to make the score 1-3 after the first
period.
During the second quarter, the Wolves matched North three goals to three
goals. Abby York scored her first two goals and Stephanie Glendenning scored her
first to make the score 4-6 at the half.
In a tight game, the Huskies were forced to put their in their All-American
goalie which allowed them to play a stronger defense to set up their
counter-attack which
produced nine goals during the quarter. King's only goal
was scored by Stephanie about half way through the quarter which made the score
5-15 at the start of the fourth quarter. Stephanie scored King's and her last
goal during the final period, while the defense held the Huskies scoreless to
end the game with King down 6-15.
After a season in which the girls had many opportunities to quit,
opportunities to be satisfied with where they were in games, in league, and in
CIF, they did not quit. They didn't quit during this game either. They got their
first experience of high level, playoff water polo. They know now what is
required to be competitive at the top level. They learned
how to play the game.
After an extraordinary season, the girls learned that they can compete, that
they can win. Their coach learned what an amazing group of athletes he has the privilege
of coaching. Thank you ladies!
