1/17/02Two Words: Hemet Swept!!!!It started like the last time, Hemet scored to take a one goal lead only one minute and twenty seconds into the game. Thirty four seconds later that lead was two goals. Then Stephanie Glendenning put the Wolves on the board. Fifty seconds later Stephanie scored again to tie the game. Another fifty seconds later Abby York found the cage to put King in the lead. The Bulldogs answered with a goal of their own to tie the score at 3-3 at the end of the first quarter. Forty seconds into the second period, the Wolves gave up a four meter and fell behind 3-4. Stephanie scored two more goals to put the Wolves ahead 5-4, only to have the Bulldogs tie the game in the last minute of the half at 5-5. Hemet scored a goal after only 29 seconds of play to start the third quarter. After that, the fans were treated to a hard fought defensive game by both teams with the third period ending with Hemet ahead by one goal and the Wolves having trouble producing an effective offense. The fourth period produced some of the most exciting water polo of the season. With Christin Boebinger consistently winning the battle and shutting down Hemet's two meter position, the rest of the team playing unselfish, team oriented defense, and Lindsay Nichols playing probably her strongest game in the goal, stopping everything that was thrown at her, both teams battling back and fourth, but unable to produce any goals. Down a goal with seven seconds left, King called timeout and setup a last chance play. With two seconds left in the game Lindsay Nichols read the defense perfectly, made the correct pass, and Stephanie scored her last goal to tie the game at 6-6 and give the Wolves a chance to win in overtime. After the two, three minute overtime periods that saw more of the tenacious defense that had been demonstrated during regulation with neither team producing any goals, the game, still tied at six when into a three minute, sudden victory overtime. First ball in wins. Three minutes later, the score was still tied at six. The teams traded ends and began the eighth period of the game. One minute and five seconds later. Abby York, playing at 2m, took a pass while under intense pressure, handled the ball, read the defense, and made a perfect pass to Katie Johnson, who had found open water on the left side of the goal. Katie head faked once, the goalie bit, and she threw a perfect lob over the goalie's head that landed in the cage to give the Wolves a 7-6 win. Dayna Van Gorder drew first blood for the Wolves, followed by Sami Chalfy and Leslie Miskulin to end the quarter with King up 3-0. Emily Neumann found the cage twice and Dayna once again during the second period to end the half with King leading 6-0. Goals were harder to come by during the third period with Dayna being the lone scorer for King. Up to now any shot at King's cage was swallowed by Tiffany Couch who played great at goalie, but finally, Hemet scored their first and last goal of the game with just one second remaining in the period. Dayna scored two more goals during the final period, with Meghan Richli tallying one more goal for the Wolves to complete the sweep and win the game 9-1.
