GIRLS WATER POLO
King Takes 1st in Arroyo Grande Tournament

After
a long, wet five hour drive up 101, King found out that it's first opponent was
a no show, but played host Arroyo Grande as a place holding game. An hour later,
the Wolves took on Paso Robles and won 10-2 to end the day with a 2-0 record and
a place in the semi-finals.
After
checking into the motel, a quick shower, and time to clean up, the team went out
to a great pizza place (Klondike's in AG) and had a great time until the lights
went out. Due to the late start of the first game on Saturday, the team
"slept in" until a very early 8:30.
After
a great breakfast, the team traveled back to Nipomo High School to take on the
host Eagles from Arroyo Grande. In a very physical, tough fought battle the
score was 2-2 at the half. During the third quarter, the Wolves pulled ahead 6-3
to make the game seem out of reach. But the Eagles battled back in the fourth to
pull within one with one minute to go. King stopped AG with a great defensive
series and then ran the clock out for the win.
The
Wolves went back to the motel for a few hours out of the rain and some rest.
(Thank you Best Western - Casa Grande Inn for the use of the upstairs meeting
room, even after we had checked out!) Traveling back to the pool for the finals,
King took on a good San Luis Obispo team in a hard fought defensive battle.
During what seemed to be an endless downpour, the score tied 3-3 after
regulation the game went into overtime. Jenny Holderman scored a well setup and
executed lob with about 1:30 left in the second overtime period to put the
Wolves up by one and Tania Acevedo scored the finishing goal with 7 seconds left
on the clock with a skip shot from 8 meters out to make the final score 5-3 and
clinch the tournament title.
Before
leaving on the long trip home, the team gathered together to celebrate the win,
the plaque and the two Wolves selected to the All-Tournament team. Rylee Scheid
was selected to first team and Roxanne Eastwood was selected as the tournament
MVP. While the two may have received individual honors, it was the team effort
required to win the top spot in the tournament.
Wolves Place 4th in Redlands Tournament
After beating San Bernardino, the Wolves entered the Redlands Tournament for
five games in three days. They opened up with a 10-3 win over Etiwanda and
followed up with a 10-2 win over host REV. On Friday, the Wolves took on Palm
Springs in a physical game and won 9-2 to take them into the semi-finals.
Saturday, the Wolves traveled to University of Redlands to play number one
ranked Redlands. The team opened up a one goal lead during the first quarter,
but were unable to contain a potent Redlands offense. King let the game get
away, letting Redlands get up 10-4 before the girls closed the gap to 10-7.
Redlands scored a couple of go-ahead goals to make the final score 12-7.
In the third place game, the Wolves took on top-ten ranked Yuciapa. In a hard
fought battle, the Wolves ended up losing 5-7. Roxanne Eastwood was selected to
the All-Tournament team as the leading scorer for the Wolves.
Girls Suffer Second Loss
The Wolves suffered their second loss of the season and in three games at
that hands of the Murrieta Valley Nighthawks. King played the 'Hawks tough for
the first two quarters. Murrieta Valley opened up a two goal lead before Jenny
Holderman scored on a extra-man situation. The Wolves tied it up early in the
second after Alina Flaherty scored and ended the first half trailing 3-4 after
Roxanne Eastwood added the first of her two goals.
Murrieta opened the second half with two unanswered goals before Roxanne
scored her second and then the 'Hawks added two more during the period. The
final period was again controlled by Murrieta Valley who scored three goals
before Rylee Schied scored for the Wolves. The final score was 5-11, bringing
King's record to 1-2.
Season Opens With A Win
The girls opened their season with a 8-2 win over Jurupa Valley. Lead by
Roxanne Eastwood (three goals) and Alina Flaherty (two goals), the team started
out the game holding the Jaguars scoreless until late in the second. Lauren
Biberston and Tiffany Couch shared time in the goal, each stopping two shots and
only allowing one.
Girls Prepare For Upcoming Season
The girls started practice on Saturday, November 13 preparing for their first
