Martin Luther King HS Information
History
The second year the school fielded both a boys' and girls' water polo team both of which competed in the Southwestern league. The boys finished 7th out of eight teams and the girls finished 5th out of six schools. The swim team entered the Sunkist League and the girls won the league championship. Year three saw the fruit of hard work. The boys placed third in league and went to CIF for the first time, losing to Yucaipa in the first round. The girls tied for third, lost the coin toss and went to CIF as an at large team, losing to JW North in the first round. The girls swim team repeated as league champions in the Sunkist league. The fourth brought unparallel success. The boys placed second in the Southwestern League, went to CIF where they lost to Ayala. The girls won an undefeated league championship, were ranked 5th and made it to the quarter finals. Both of the swim teams won league championships and the girls went on to place third in CIF. The following year saw a continued success. The boys placed third in the Southwestern League, went to CIF where they lost to Riverside Poly in the first round. The girls were again league champions and fell to Arlington, again in the quarter finals. The swim team demonstrated its dominance with the girls again taking the league championship and did well at CIF. Year six brought about some serious changes. Martin Luther King High School moved into the very competitive Ivy League. The boys tied for third, but lost the playoff game against La Sierra, failing to make it to CIF for the first time in four years. The girls never lost to an unranked team, but failed to make the playoffs when three league teams were ranked in the top five of division V in CIF. The swim team saw competition stiffen also as the move to the Ivy League also moved them from division IV to division II. The boys finished 5th in the league, but placed a relay team in CIF and the girls tied for second, also placing one relay team and one individual in a highly competitive CIF meet. During the second year in the Ivy League, the boys again tied for third and lost to North in the playoff game to get to CIF. The second year of Ivy League, the girls did not fair well either. They placed fourth in league and failed to make the playoffs. The 2005 boys polo season saw them in the same position. Tied with for third,
CIF playoff birth on the line, and in a playoff game to qualify. Again, they
lost the deciding game, this time to North. 2006 saw a change in the coaching staff for the boys. Coach Williamson
stepped aside allowing Kevin Rosa to take the reigns of the boys program. Coach
Rosa repeated the league results of the previous year. The boys tied for third
in the Ivy League, again with North. But in a turn around from last year, the
Wolves beat North for the final CIF playoff spot. They drew a very tough first
round opponent, eventual champion Santa Barbara. In 2007, the boys had a very successful year. Winning more games than any previous year, placing third in league, and advancing to CIF only to have to take on the number one ranked Villa Park.
